Matias has Leber's congenital amaurosis (LCA) blind with no light perception

 

After belt cane

Tearful belt cane introduction. Matias cried each time mom put the belt cane on him. When he cried, she would remove the cane. Encouraged to work past the tears, his family found a way to communicate the cane will remain on. Matias began to have fun wearing his belt cane.

December 16, 2018

Practice in the playroom.    Matias is wearing his belt cane,  walking and holding his dad's hand. The tight-spaces cane frame contacts the sofa, plush rocking toy and wooden toy cart he was scene stepping on when  guided without a cane. His tears result when made to let go of his dad's hand.

December 18, 2018

Practice on the sidewalk.    Matias is wearing his belt cane,  walking and holding his granny's hand. The tight-spaces frame is not ideal for outside, but each time the cane tips fall off the curb, locate a bush, or scrape the surface ahead, Matias gets essential path information.

January 5, 2019

Matias steps independently.    Matias is wearing his belt cane,  walking and holding his mom's hand walking on a gravel trail. During the walk, mom continues to encourage him to hold his cane and walk, he does walk, the cane frame locates his sister's bike, he reaches down to investigate.

January 18, 2019

Walking in the snow.            Matias is seen walking a few independent steps wearing his belt cane, and walking and holding his mom's hand. The daily cane frame contacts the sidewalk and snow. He is pulling his mom and appears eager to explore.

January 26, 2019

Exiting front door, steps sidewalk Matias' cane frame indicates location of the front door. Drops down to indicate exact location of the stairs. He frees his cane frame (once they came with bottom grips), and his mood appears engaged and happy.

January 29, 2019

Matias holds on while dancing.

Matias is wearing his tight-spaces belt cane at home. His mom is reinforcing the need to keep the cane on the ground. She is also encouraging him to let go of her hand. He begins dancing to the music.

February 25, 2019

Matias guided at the zoo.    Matias is wearing his belt cane,  walking and holding his granny's at the zoo. During the walk, mom continues to encourage him to keep his cane down. She knows that when he lifts the cane off the ground it doesn't provide any path information.
